French security forces are on high alert as the country prepares to see in the New Year, with 10,000 police officers deployed in the Paris region alone to guarantee the safety of residents and tourists. Around 600,000 revellers are expected to gather on the French capital's iconic Avenue des Champs-Elysées, for the traditional New Year celebration. As in other major weste cities, security has been tightened in the wake of the recent terrorist attacks that have struck Europe. The world's most famous avenue will become a no-car zone, protected by concrete blocks, to prevent a repeat of the deadly truck attacks that hit Nice and Berlin this year. Paris officials said 2,000 security officers and 400 medics would be on standby in nearby streets. Following the Berlin attack, suspected assailant Anis Amri travelled from Germany to the Netherlands and then on to France before heading to Italy where police shot him dead, investigative sources revealed Wednesday. Two days after the December 19 attack on a Christmas market in Berlin left 12 dead, the 24-year-old Tunisian boarded an oveight bus at the Dutch city of Nijmegen, near the German border, that took him to Lyon in central France, sources close to the investigation told the AFP Wednesday. At Lyon, Amri got off the bus at the Gare de Lyon-Part-Dieu station, where surveillance cameras filmed him Thursday, according to sources. From there, he took a train to the French Alpine town of Chambery before heading to Milan, in northe Italy. Italian police shot Amri dead in the early hours of Friday after he fired at officers who had stopped him for a routine identity check. A French mayor who is a member of France’s right-wing eurosceptic National Front party has renamed a street in his town “rue de Brexit”, meant as a “homage” to Britain's decision to leave the European Union in June. Mayor Julien Sanchez called his decision to rename the street in the southe French town of Beaucaire a “homage to the sovereign British people’s decision" to reject the European Union in a June 23 referendum. A member of Marine Le Pen’s eurosceptic National Front party, Sanchez announced the move via Twitter. He included a document showing the Beaucaire city council’s 23-to-9 vote in favour of the decision, dated December 22. The decision can be contested before the administrative tribunal of Nimes within the next two months, according to France Bleu news. The previously unnamed street lies near rue Robert Schuman and avenue Jean Monnet, which were both named after men considered to be founding fathers of the EU. A woman who killed her abusive husband and became a symbol of the suffering of France's domestic violence victims walked free from prison on Wednesday after receiving a presidential pardon. President Francois Hollande granted the pardon because he "considered that (Jacqueline) Sauvage's place was no longer in prison but with her family," the president's office said in a statement earlier. Sauvage, 69, was serving a 10-year sentence at a jail southeast of Paris for shooting her husband Norbert Marot dead a day after their son hanged himself in 2012. A police source said a car seen leaving the prison was carrying Sauvage and three family members. Hordes of joualists were on hand, but the car did not stop. Sauvage's daughter Carole Marot told French radio earlier that she was on her way to the prison. "I'm crying, it's wonderful," she said. "Endless thanks to the president."
